The Core Principle: Pack Light, Dress Modestly
Sri Lanka has a hot, humid climate across most of the island and a conservative Buddhist culture. The combination means lightweight, breathable fabrics in modest cuts are the practical and respectful choice. Linen, cotton and technical fabrics work well. Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat. A good rule of thumb: if you wouldn't wear it to a relative's home for Sunday lunch, it probably isn't appropriate for most of Sri Lanka.
You will be removing your shoes frequently — at every temple, at many restaurants and guesthouses, and at people's homes. Shoes that slip on and off easily are essential. Sandals or loafers are ideal for most settings; save the lace-up trainers for hiking days.
Clothing: The Essential List
For a 10-day tour you need: 5–6 lightweight shirts or blouses (short-sleeved is fine, but have at least one long-sleeved option for temples and cool hill country evenings), 3 pairs of lightweight long trousers or maxi skirts (shorts are fine for beaches but not temples), 1 light rain jacket or packable waterproof, 2–3 sets of swimwear, comfortable walking shoes with ankle support, flip-flops or sandals, and one smart outfit for a nice dinner.
A light pashmina or sarong is one of the most versatile items you can pack — it serves as a beach cover-up, temple shawl, blanket on an air-conditioned transfer, and makeshift pillow. Buy one before you go or from any market in Sri Lanka for a few hundred rupees.
Health & Medical Essentials
Sunscreen is expensive and hard to find in high-SPF formulations in Sri Lanka — bring your own, and bring enough. SPF 50+ is recommended for outdoor activities. Insect repellent containing DEET is important, especially for wildlife areas and evenings. Oral rehydration sachets are invaluable — heat and spicy food can cause dehydration quickly.
A basic first-aid kit (plasters, antiseptic cream, antihistamine, antidiarrheal tablets, paracetamol and ibuprofen) covers most eventualities. Prescription medicines should be carried in their original labelled packaging with a copy of the prescription. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is essential — not optional.
Electronics & Photography
Sri Lanka uses Type D and Type G plugs (the same as the UK, India, and many other countries). Bring a universal adaptor if you are travelling from the USA, Europe or Australia. Voltage is 230V. A power bank is useful for long transfer days. Download offline Google Maps for Sri Lanka before you travel — mobile data is cheap and available but coverage drops in remote areas.
For photography, a versatile zoom lens (24–200mm equivalent) covers most situations. Wildlife photography benefits from a longer lens — 400mm or equivalent. Dust and humidity are hard on electronics; a dry bag or waterproof camera bag is worth having. Memory cards are cheaply available in Colombo if you forget.
What NOT to Pack
Leave the drone at home unless you have pre-arranged the necessary permits (required for most heritage sites and national parks — the process takes weeks). Leave the bikini tops for the beaches only — wearing swimwear beyond the beach, poolside or private villa is considered disrespectful. Do not pack valuables you cannot afford to lose.
Laundry services are fast and cheap throughout Sri Lanka — most hotels offer same-day service. There is no need to overpack. You can also buy lightweight clothing, sarongs and beach cover-ups cheaply and with great variety throughout the country.
Safari-Specific Packing
For game drives in Yala, Minneriya or Udawalawe: wear earth tones (khaki, olive, beige, brown) — bright clothing disturbs animals and draws unnecessary attention. Bring binoculars if you own them. A long-sleeved shirt protects against sun on exposed game drives. A lightweight buff or scarf keeps the red dust out of your face and hair.
Closed shoes rather than sandals are better in jeeps — the red laterite dust of the park floor gets into everything and scratched feet can become infected in tropical heat. A small day pack with water, snacks, sunscreen, binoculars and camera covers everything you need for a four-hour game drive.
