A Brief History of the Fort
Galle Fort was first built by the Portuguese in 1588 and massively expanded by the Dutch VOC in 1663 — the structure standing today is almost entirely Dutch, making it the best-preserved Dutch colonial fortification in Asia. The Dutch administered the fort for over a century before ceding it to the British in 1796, who found it so well constructed that they added little except administrative buildings.
The fort was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. It remains a living town — around 400 families live within the walls alongside boutique hotels, restaurants, galleries and shops — which gives it a vitality absent from purely preserved historic sites. Walking the ramparts at sunset, with the Indian Ocean crashing against the walls below, is one of Sri Lanka's great experiences.
Walking the Ramparts
The ramparts are free to walk at any time and form a complete circuit of the western and southern walls — approximately 1.5 kilometres of walking with extraordinary views in every direction. Begin at the Main Gate and walk anticlockwise towards the lighthouse. The Point Utrecht Bastion, at the southernmost tip, is the best sunset viewpoint — crowds gather here nightly as the sun drops into the Indian Ocean.
The northern ramparts look back over the cricket ground (one of the most picturesque grounds in world cricket, with the fort walls as its boundary) and across to the new town of Galle. Allow 45 minutes for the full circuit at a leisurely pace, longer if you want to stop at the various cannon emplacements and interpretive boards along the way.
The Best Streets and Neighbourhoods
Church Street is the fort's most photogenic thoroughfare — the Dutch Reformed Church at one end, boutique hotels and galleries lining both sides, and the characteristic Dutch-era buildings with their coral-stone walls and jack-wood shutters. The Historical Mansion and Museum on Leyn Baan Street is a private collection of extraordinary depth — antique Dutch furniture, lacework, jewellery, gemstones and colonial artefacts crammed into a colonial townhouse.
The southern streets near the ramparts are the quietest and most atmospheric. Pick any lane and walk — you will find something unexpected. The fort rewards slow exploration more than any other destination in Sri Lanka.
Where to Stay Inside the Fort
The Amangalla on Church Street is the most celebrated address in Sri Lanka — a former Dutch-era Galle Face Hotel converted into one of the finest boutique hotels in Asia. Rates are high but the experience — teak floors, white-washed colonial walls, a legendary afternoon tea service — is exceptional.
Fort Bazaar is the best mid-range option — beautifully restored rooms, an excellent rooftop bar and a genuine connection to the fort's artistic community. The Galle Fort Hotel on Church Street and the Sun House on the hill above the fort are two further strong options. Staying inside the walls means you have the fort to yourself in the early morning before the day-trippers arrive — worth the premium for this alone.
Eating and Drinking in the Fort
The Tuk Tuk Café near the lighthouse is the most consistently reliable restaurant in the fort — excellent local seafood, good cocktails, and a terrace with views. The Serendipity Arts Café on Pedlar Street serves the best breakfast in Galle, with freshly baked bread, tropical fruits and real coffee. For a special dinner, the Amangalla's Dining Room is unmatched for atmosphere.
The Galle Fort Spa is worth half a day — genuinely skilled therapists, a beautiful setting, and treatments that use locally sourced ingredients. For shopping, Barefoot and Exotic Roots carry the best Sri Lankan textiles, jewellery and crafts. The fort's gem shops are legitimate — this is genuine sapphire and blue topaz country, and prices are a fraction of what you would pay internationally.
Day Trips from the Fort
Unawatuna beach is 5 minutes by tuk-tuk — a beautiful curved bay with calm water, good snorkelling on the reef, and excellent warungs along the beach front. Koggala Lake, 10 minutes east, offers excellent boat trips to a Buddhist island temple and through mangrove channels. Stilt fishermen are still occasionally seen along this coastline, particularly in the early morning.
Mirissa whale watching (December to April) is an hour down the coast — blue whales and sperm whales are reliably seen and the boats are of reasonable quality. The Handunugoda Tea Estate near Talpe (15 minutes from Galle) produces the legendary Virgin White Tea and offers estate tours with tastings — a fascinating half-morning for tea enthusiasts.
